I have used the phrase “be sure your sin will find you out” many times as a parent, as a school teacher, and as a preacher. I usually use it as a warning to people who are in a situation where there are no human eyes on their conduct in order to try to keep them from the temptation of yielding to sin.

If we fail to confess them, the wrongdoings of our past have a way of hunting us down and forcing us to confess — especially when it comes to the permanent, irretrievable footprints we leave behind on the Internet. But Moses probably put it best millennia before the Internet: “Be sure your sins will find you out” (Numbers 32:23).

The KJV puts it this way: “you may be sure that your sin will find you out”. So we have plenty of warnings here. If we think we can sin privately and with impunity, we are only kidding ourselves. And these biblical truths are far too often verified for us in the headlines of our daily newspapers.

Sin never escapes His watchful eye. We can fool ourselves and others, but never the Lord. God sees the sin in our lives and desires us to deal with it, not hide it. Hiding it only hinders our progress in God’s will and plan (Prov. 28:13) and creates trouble for others. Numbers 32:23 reminds us, “be sure your sin will find you out.”.
